Sedona- Fay Canyon

Sedona- Fay Canyon

When the weather is good, I want to try to get out and just go for walks, not hikes. I need to keep my circulation going. So I did look up an easy hike to Fay Canyon and I went there on March 2nd.

The beginning of the trail. ..a pretty straightforward and level hike

There are two main roads into Sedona from interstate 17. They meet in downtown Sedona in an area known as the “Y”. Directions are given to different parts of Sedona referencing the “Y”. Cathedral Rock and the other areas I hiked, such as Bell Rock, are great hikes and are closer to me. They are off of highway 179. This hike is quite a bit further as it is on the other side of Sedona and off of highway 89A. This is a very scenic road.

as you can see, there are no roads that cut across between 89 and 179 unfortunately. So it is one side or the other.

Because of my wrist, and doing everything one handed, it does take me a lot longer to get going in the morning. I did not arrive at the trailhead until 1:00 in the afternoon. The strategy is to either arrive very early like 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. or late afternoon when people have hiked and are leaving.

at the end of the parking lot you can see one of the touring trolleys going through.

As I pulled in, two other vehicles were pulling out! So I could just drive in and Park. Beautiful.

this sign gives information about the trail heads that are located here. The Faye Canyon Trail is a mile out and a mile back. I did not notice that it also gained in elevation but I sure did when I walked it 😬

I took along my sling, hat, walking stick, fanny pack, two bottles of water, a snack of peanuts and M&Ms, hand wipes and Kleenex. Whenever I hike my sinuses get busy! 😬

I felt better, once I started walking. It’s nice to be out in the sun, with other people and surrounded by beautiful scenery and moving. I was very careful with my walking and most of the trail was pretty good. There were a few rocky sections but they weren’t long and they weren’t bad.

The trail wasn’t crowded. Because it is an easy trail, we had all sorts of hikers and walkers and people of all ages. People were taking their time and talking. I often smile and say hi and they do likewise. One young woman saw my sling and first thing she said was ” you go girl!”. I wasn’t trying to make a statement… I was just trying to be out to enjoy myself, but that was sweet.

Sometimes with people close in age to me, we would take a few minutes to stop and talk. We talked about what happened and how it happened and laughed that it was not a more exciting story! One man and his wife shared that he had broken his wrist 5 years before and also had to have surgery. He had a plate and screws put in but also had to have bone taken from his hip and he said that was the worst part!! My arm in a sling did become a conversation piece with people.

Nice trail bed and shaded

I can see where this would be a popular hike during the summer months with the hot sun and heat. A lot of the trail is under trees therefore it is shaded and cool.

It got a bit Rocky here. I think we are actually following along one of the drainage washes from the Canyon at this point. Then it was better again

This walk did have a few scenic areas that were called to your attention online, but I forgot about. It was on the way back that I noticed two of them. One is an archway into the side of the cliff and the other is a isolated stone tower that looks like a wine goblet! So I did find them on the way back.

you can just barely see the arch in the wall, but it is pretty
I have to say that does look like a wine goblet 👍
I put myself in the picture so you can estimate the sizes of the squares 😉

These trees look like the bark has been burned. But it isn’t. It’s called alligator bark. As the tree gets older the bark turns into these kind of squares. Quite the striking trees.

I was getting tired and I did not know how far I had to go before I got to the end of the trail. What also started to happen, was that I could hear my heartbeat getting loud in my left ear. Now that is the ear that I have a hearing loss in and often is affected by my sinuses. So I decided to take a break on a nice log and see if that would calm down and also to decide if I should go on or not. Some young ladies coming by said it was just five more minutes down the path and it was very cool (temperature wise) and pretty there. Knowing I still had to walk all the way back, I wasn’t keen on going any further. But after the sounds in my ear dissipated I decided to just walk around the corner and see what I could see. And there it was! The end! Exactly 60 steps from where I was!! I’m very glad I didn’t turn around!!

The sign says End of trail.😂 I don’t know why the photo did not automatically reverse it because I took a selfie. It usually does 🤔.
just think. If I hadn’t broken my wrist I would be able to climb up there with the rest of them. I bet they had a fantastic view!

thanks to a lady there, I was able to get my photo taken by The boulders and that large Anvil type Rock behind…

how large the boulders were and how they accumulated just at the end of the trail. It was a nice open spot.

this was one of the walls at the end of the trail. The sun just went behind it so I got beautiful coloring on it!
another alligator bark tree.
just a pretty area. These pictures are on the way back.
the way back was almost all downhill and went really quick. As I said, I didn’t realize how much I had been climbing while I walked.
this is a flash flood channel. You can see how it comes down and curves to the right. At the curve it is at least 6 ft deep. They must have some real streams of water coming through!!

The view coming back to the parking lot. The hike was just about right. I still felt a little anxious as I walked, but it went well.

Where I am staying at the RV park, the cell reception is really poor. So today I drove a couple miles into town to do a little grocery shopping and to get diesel. I kept downloading photos and dictating while there. I just sat in the parking lots for 15 minutes at a time and gave my phone a lot to download. Then it was usually done by the time I came back out of shopping. 😃 👍. I can’t do any blogging at my site.

Diesel is now $4.49 a gallon so I only put in 8 gallons. I’m not going to be doing a lot of driving. Have no idea if it’s going to climb higher or come back down with the war going on.

I hope you enjoyed another view of Sedona. 🤗 I will update everyone on the status of my wrist and what will take place next, soon. I will know more in the next couple days.

Everyone take care and be safe!!
