Canyon Lake, Texas
Well, writing everyday a little bit sure didn’t work out. By the time I was able to text or email with family it would be late and getting dark so I’d go back to my campsite. During the daytime I was busy but I will catch up! π€ I know! I keep saying that. I’ll probably be writing long after I’m home π¬
I left Garner State Park 2 days ago and had reservations at Potter’s Campground on Canyon lake. This is a Core of Engineers facility. it is laid out nicely and is a lot like a state park. The difference is that it doesn’t have the hiking trails or other amenities. But it does have the the showers and bathroom facilities and real nice Campground area.
Canyon Lake itself is a very large lake and is most likely a reservoir since the Corpe of Engineers is involved. The first day I was here the lake actually reflected turquoise. Beautiful. I found out it is the deepest lake in Texas at a maximum depth of 125 ft. Boy that isn’t that deep compared to Wisconsin lakes, is it? I also found out that this is one of the top five cleanest, clearest lakes in Texas as well. Interesting. Serendipity that I happen to get a campsite here. π€
This area also has a lot of day use picnic tables with shelters over them as well. Small compared to the other Campground I was at, so a lot quieter. π Quite a few people pull in here with pontoon boats or fishing boats.
I am getting ready to pull out in about 45 minutes. I will then go to dump my tanks and then I will be heading past the east side of San Antonio to Highway 10. My first stop for the night is going to be the Guadalupe County Hwy 10 Rest Stop! Yep. I could not get any campsites anywhere for the next 2 days. And when I looked around at the private ones they were either full-time or really expensive or so close together I’d rather do a rest stop. But the rest stops are a big deal here, and you can stay up to 24 hours. They’re really meant for you to stop and take a break. Believe it or not, you can look up their rest stops online. This one has some historical items inside and it looks quite large. They also have 24-hour security. Apparently there’s some federal funds that go along with this to keep drivers safe and rested π
My next stop tomorrow night is another big rest stop that is just west of Houston Texas. After that I have four campgrounds scheduled so I should be good. I’m heading north after Houston . I’ll have two more campsites in Texas and then I will cross into Arkansas and angle towards Memphis. The last one scheduled is on the northeast corner of Missouri and then I’ll cross into Illinois. That’s in the second week of April I think.
I’m trying to time it out so that when I pull into the rest stop it will be around 4:00 in the afternoon. So it should be early enough that I can get a good spot for the evening, but not too early. Not sure how I’m going to sleep but usually I can sleep pretty good with traffic around me. I’m thinking they may have the RVs separated from the semis and from the autos. The bigger places have started to do that. We will see!
I will not have any electricity so I made sure to make a big pot of coffee today! β I’m also going to use a microwave meal for lunch and stock up with water. They’ll also have water at the rest stop too. And I have to remember to keep my phone charged or I’ll be sitting in the truck talking on it !! π (I’m not going to run the generator and it’s only supposed to get into the 40s tonight. π€) If I need a little bit of heat my batteries can provide that for a short while with the propane.
wish me luck and I will check in again soon. Take care everyone!! π€
Change of Plans.
Of course when I had everything updated to you there was a change! But to the positive π
On a whim I decided to go on the Potter’s Creek website to see if there was any availability for tonight. Turned out there was! The ADA site was available π If nobody has reserved it for handicapped purposes, and it’s the day of, it’s open for anybody. So I was able to reserve it just before I pulled out!! So I have now ….broken down my campsite, dumped my tanks, moved into this site for another day and set up again. No rest stop for tonight !! And even better, the lake is in my backyard. π
I also have my own path down to the lake and it won’t be as far to carry a chair. πTomorrow when I pull out, I will go to the Guadalupe rest stop and check it out. But I will be stopping at the second rest area just west of Houston for overnight. I have to put on some miles because it’s quite a way to my campground at Lake Livingston State Park. 265 miles, minimum of four and a half hours ….but even longer with an RV.
Another day of quiet and sun. βοΈ I think it’s time to pop some popcorn π
