Lake Fausse Pointe State Park
I have now completed a journey south to this State Park. Surprise, surprise! NO, and I mean NO cell reception. Nothing. Looking at where the state park is located, I should have known this. So I will be traveling to a nearby city to establish contact with my family and wifi. Funny, I received one unsolicited phone call, and two texts, but I couldn’t send or call out. I’m able to send this nw, because I traveled south to a little area of cities and am eating and sitting in a McDonalds parking lot. Gotta love their wifi!!
Lake Fausse Pointe State Park is located just east of New Iberia. It juts up against the Atchafalya Basin. The Basin is a huge wetlands all the way to the ocean. There is a levee that runs its length along Levee Road separating the wetlands from the roads and cities on this side. It was quite a relaxing drive along the levee, as it is not the main road here. It provides access to the state park, to fishing and to people living on BOTH sides of the levee. It also leads to smaller cities farther South. BUT, it’s all gravel later the park! 20 miles worth. Some places the gravel is deep and high in the middle, as it is only wide enough for one vehicle, so it builds up. You have to have high clearance. It’s nice to have a truck to be able to do these things!!
The State Park is 6,000 acres which was once part of the Basin. In the past, the Chitimacha Indians had their home site here. From the boat launches here you can go into the waterways that wind through the Basin. (Is this where the banjo begins playing?)
Since it is Fall here as well, the wetlands around the park are dry, though the leaves are still on the trees. I took my bike on one of the hiking trails, and I’m glad I didn’t walk it, as there wasn’t much to see. I have been here before, towards Spring, and it was much wetter. Therefore more possibility of alligators, and many more marsh birds. I did see a snowy Egret today and turtles on a log!!
